Transportation to get into the State

Air: Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport to Sikkim which is about 117 km from the Capital city Gangtok. It is well connected by air with Delhi, Mumbai and other Major cities of India.

Road: All the Major towns and villages of the state are well connected by Sikkim National Transport Services. NH 31 (A) is connected with Siliguri which is considered as the gateway of Sikkim.

Rail: New Jalpaiguri is the nearest railhead to Sikkim which is about 130 km away from the capital city Gangtok.

Entry Formalities

  • Inner Line Permit is required to obtain to enter into the state.

  • Foreign tourists can obtain it from Sikkim house in Kolkata and New Delhi.

  • It can also collect from the Entry point of Sikkim at Rongpo.

  • Some of the destinations within Sikkim come under restricted or protected categories. These areas can be accessed either with special permission from Sikkim police or the Ministry of Defence, New Delhi for certain destinations.

  • Taxis and Agents not affiliated to TAAS are not allowed to take tourists to Nathula.

  • Only JEEPs, SUMOs and commander vehicles are allowed.

  • Vehicles not registered in Sikkim are not allowed to take tourists on local sight-seeing or distance travel across the state.

  • Any taxi registered anywhere can bring in and take out visitors to the state.

  • All the rules are only applicable to the public vehicle only not for privet vehicles.

  • In North District, vehicles registered outside India can access with special permission.
